Al Teixeira Named One of North Branford's Shining Stars

Three people will be named Shining Stars by the North Branford Education Foundation in March, including Albert Teixeira.

On March 30, three town residents will be named Shining Stars by the North Branford Education Foundation. Kris Smith, Albert Teixeira and William Choti will be honored for their service to the community with a dinner at Woodwinds

Teixeira is the third of the three Shining Stars to be profiled (Choti was profiled on Feb. 27 and Smith was featured yesterday).

Albert Teixeira first appeared in Northford in 1985, along with his wife Suzanne and their one-year-old daughter, Lauren. In 1988, the family was joined by a son, Daniel.

Over the years, Al has been involved with various community and education efforts starting with the inaugural Community Round-Up Day, where we created an organized food drive and organization system. Around that time he attended the “Super Teams” program in New London, which attempted to identify and propose possible action plans to address some pressing issues for our younger citizens.

He served as Master of Ceremony for the community talent show for several years. Here he introduced the now famous “Cow Joke” series and fulfilled his promise to have a “Pie in the Face” skit in the final performance.

For several years, Al was an active member of the North Branford Soccer Club, where he coached both boys and girls and served as the club’s treasurer. Our local Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops enjoyed his support and active participation along with chaperoning on several out-of-state adventures.

Prior to retiring from the City of Hartford, where Al worked as a Tech Support Manager, he presented Don McCarthy, the then-superintendent, a proposal that outlined a possible future for information technology for the Town and Board of Education. This plan was used as a starting point for the technology committee and plans in use today.

If you are around town now, you can find Al showing children magic tricks while they’re waiting with their parents at the local Rite Aid or in the auditorium in the control room or at Saint Monica’s Church where he is an active member as an extraordinary minister and the Knights of Columbus serving as the Financial Secretary.

An avid gardener, Al has assisted in several local school gardening and, greenhouse projects. In July, Al was elected to the Treasurer position for our Totoket Historical Society and recently upgraded their computer system.
