Patch readers weigh in on the killing of a black bear, pedestrian safety and pensions.
Cheshire "And would the DEP charge the black bear with murder if the bear killed this man's family? Is this man really a criminal for killing the bear?" Chris Cioffi poses these questions in response to the arrest of a Burlington man for killing a black bear that came onto his property. Stratford "People need to slow down for a few minutes and pay attention." This, jmf says, will lead to safer streets for pedestrians. The comment is one of many as residents discuss the fact that there have been seven pedestrians struck by vehicles so far this year — three shy of the number for all of 2011. Hamden "You don't have to be an accountant to figure this one out..." Dr. Alfred C. Whitehead diagnosis the problem and provides a prescription to …
In this first of a series, the author examines the intersection of hyper-parenting and feminism. Where do we go from here?
In another shocking example of poor journalistic judgment, the current Time magazine cover of an attractive mother breastfeeding her three-year-old son stoked intense debate among mothers across the nation just in time for Mother’s Day. The cover, reading “Are you Mom enough?” invites the reader to learn about the unorthodox childcare advice administered by longtime parenting guru Dr. William Sears. Dr Sears, who recommends a technique called attachment parenting, advises a host of techniques designed to foster—he says—a safe and secure childrearing environment. The attachment parenting mother breastfeeds on demand until the child self-weans, sometimes not until kindergarten. The mother wears the young baby in a sling—nearly all day, as …
An old pump and corroded pipes caused minor disruption, but all issues should be taken care of by the end of the day.
Corroded pipes and an old pump have caused some minor water issues at Jerome Harrison Elementary School over the past few weeks. According to Superintendent Scott Schoonmaker, the pump broke three weeks ago. "The original pump was 15 years old and had reached the end of its life," said Schoonmaker. He reported that after the original pump broke, a licensed plumber on staff was able to patch the part with an alternate pump while they waited for the new pump and parts. In the meantime in order to prepare to install the new pump, some of the pipes had to be replaced. "Some of the pipes had fully disintegrated," said Schoonmaker. "We weren't aware the pipes were that corroded." The corroded pipes caused the water pressure to drop earlier in …
If all of the pieces fall into place, regional dispatch could be in place by the end of the year.
In his report at the May 1 Town Council meeting, Town Manager Richard Branigan noted that the 75 cent 911 fee on people’s phone bills had passed through the House and Senate, which should provide grants for regionalizing dispatch. “The process has been fairly aggressive,” said Fire Chief William Seward at the May 3 Fire Commission meeting. He reported that there are three possible locations for a regional dispatch center–the North Branford Police Department, Town Hall and Co. 4. The process involves installing a 100-foot communication tower and many system upgrades, which would be covered by the grant money received. While the process has been aggressive, Mayor Anthony Candelora also noted that it is lengthy. “The town has applied for a …
North Branford Police Chief Matthew Canelli shared statistics from April as well as some other happenings from the past month at the May 15 meeting.
At the May 14 Police Commission meeting, North Branford Police Department Chief Matthew Canelli presented the statistics from the month of April. Incident activity included: Canelli reported that the vehicle maintenance costs for April were just less than $2,900, noting that majority of that cost was to replace the transmission on car 11, which has 154,000 miles on it. "We're never going to get that money out of that car," said Police Commission Vice Chairman Dave Palumbo. "I'd just hate to see the numbers [for vehicle repairs] going the other way again [after going down after getting the new vehicles]." The cost of prisoner watch dating back to July 1, 2011 stands at $10,581, while proceeds from permits, fines, etc. stand at $5,167, which…
The North Branford boys’ tennis team has several standouts this season.

What's on Wednesday night?
Wednesday, May 16 Modern Family, 9 p.m., ABC Last week’s episode was the perfect mix of emotion and humor. The humanity of Jay was really touching, in both his reminiscences of the dissolution of his marriage and his care of Gloria’s feet. Don’t Trust The B …, 9:30 p.m., ABC “Meatballs!” Seriously, if you are not watching this – why not? And thank goodness, it has been renewed! Criminal Minds, 9 p.m., CBS Season finale – and for all you fans of rampant misogyny, this has been renewed.
I'm thinking about all the great accomplishments by players and teams from our southwestern CT Patch towns.
[Note: Want your photos and/or write-ups from North Branford youth or recreational sports in featured on North Branford Patch? Here's how!] I'm thinking the Cheshire boys volleyball team realizes they're on the verge of doing something special. A year ago, they had a perfect season, going 22-0 in route to a state championship. Behind 6'10" senior Nate Howard, the Rams haven't lost this year, increasing their winning streak to a remarkable 34 straight games. I'm thinking that Shayna Delaney of Pomperaug is authoring one of the best seasons of any player in the history of girls lacrosse in Connecticut. She scored a total of 20 goals in her first two games and still hasn't been stopped. Delaney has ripped the back of the net an incredible 96…
And, Lieberman talks with CNN about the Taliban.
BLUMENTHAL: In an interview with The Daily Campus, the senator expressed support for Know Before You Owe Private Lender Act, which would require private lenders to inform prospective student borrowers of all of their loan options, "so people don’t leap into committing." LIEBERMAN: Following the death of a Afghan peacemaker in Kabul on Sunday, the senator told CNN that the Taliban "is not interested in peace talks," according to GovExec.com. Lieberman also said that the U.S. should "continue to put pressure" on the Taliban to engage in these talks. HIMES: The congressman used Twitter to ponder what's coming this week in Congress' 2012 session: "Back in DC. Last week, GOP saved a non-existent $20 bn from TBTF banks and eliminated a real $…
