The beloved longtime WTNH meteorologist and East Haven resident passed away today at the age of 66 after 'living his dream" as a Connecticut weatherman.
Dr. Mel Goldstein, the longtime WTNH meteorologist and shoreline East Haven resident, passed away today at the age of 66, according to a report on WTNH. Dr. Mel, as most people know him, was one of the most well-known figures in the state, having served as a full-time weatherman for the New Haven television station since 1986 — until his ailing health forced him into retirement last October. Goldstein was diagnosed more than 15 years ago with multiple myeloma, a form of bone cancer that affects the body’s immune system. Up until his death today, the meterologist had been receiving care from the nurses at Connecticut Hospice in Branford. Goldstein gave a special "farewell forecast" on WTNH Nov. 17. Edward “Chef Ed” Slubowski, 50 of Northford, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Nov. 5, 2011. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Catherine Taylor Slubowski and his beautiful daughter, Madeline Elizabeth Slubowski. Ed was born on January 13, 1961 in New Haven to the late Sigmund and Madeline Slubowski. Ed grew up in East Haven and was a 1979 graduate of East Haven High School and a Culinary graduate of Eli Whitney Technical School. He was the Food Service Director for the North Branford School System. Prior to that, Ed worked for Anthem Blue Cross/Blue Shield. He was a member of CT Hackers Golf Club. Watching his exuberance as he joyfully broadcast weather conditions will always remain with me. "Dr. Mel is on !" rang out in our home and all would come to the TV. His deep concern for everyone's well being and safety during storms got our attention every time. His ability to teach us his craft over the air waves was incredible.
