Andrew Rocco Named to Champlain College Dean's List

Another North Branford resident earns Dean's List!

Andrew Rocco, a resident of North Branford, has been named to the Spring 2012 Champlain College's Dean's List for academic achievements and achieving a semester grad point average of 3.5 or higher. Rocco is majoring in Legal Studies. Since 1878, Champlain College has provided career-focused education to students from its hilltop campus in Burlington, Vt. Champlain's distinctive educational approach embodies the notion that true learning only occurs when information and experience come together to create knowledge. Water Issues at JHS Soon to Be Resolved

An old pump and corroded pipes caused minor disruption, but all issues should be taken care of by the end of the day.

Corroded pipes and an old pump have caused some minor water issues at Jerome Harrison Elementary School over the past few weeks. According to Superintendent Scott Schoonmaker, the pump broke three weeks ago. "The original pump was 15 years old and had reached the end of its life," said Schoonmaker.  He reported that after the original pump broke, a licensed plumber on staff was able to patch the part with an alternate pump while they waited for the new pump and parts. In the meantime in order to prepare to install the new pump, some of the pipes had to be replaced.  "Some of the pipes had fully disintegrated," said Schoonmaker. "We weren't aware the pipes were that corroded." The corroded pipes caused the water pressure to drop earlier in …

Dombrowski and Parisi Improve to 12-3 in Doubles Action

The North Branford boys’ tennis team has several standouts this season.

While the North Branford boys’ tennis team holds a record of 3-14, Coach Rick Geremia still has several standout performers, most notably the No. 1 doubles team of senior captains Ryan Dombrowski and Joe Parisi. The pair won all three of its matches last week to hold a 12-3 record in 2012. Dombrowski and Parisi notched the T-Birds’ only win against Cromwell on May 7, topping Eric Meadru and Hunter Coleman 6-2, 7-5. At No. 2 doubles, Randy Willis and John Opie fell 6-1, 6-1. In singles action, Scott Jackson took a 6-1, 6-2 loss at No. 1, Andrew Westwood fell 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2, Jack Caplan lost 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, Dan Constantinedi dropped a 6-4, 6-3 match at No. 4 and Phil Maresca lost 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5. TVES Wins CT’s Paul G. Earth Artist Program Award

Totoket Valley Elementary School was the Connecticut recipient of an award from the Environmental Protection Agency.

Representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency will be visiting Totoket Valley Elementary School today to film a video with art teacher Elyse Mortensen, Principal Kris Lindsay and a student representative from each of the 4th-grade classes. The group is being honored after being the Connecticut winner of the EPA’s Paul G. Earth Artist Program Award. In the past, the contest was based on poems, essays and posters and Mortenson was thrilled that this year’s contested was broadened to include art and sculpture. “This was the perfect opportunity to get the kids involved so the 4th-grade classes and I brainstormed ideas for a community project,” said Mortensen. “It was important that it was something we could as a large group and a …

Girls’ Track Beats Old Lyme, Falls to HK

The North Branford girls’ track team competes against Shoreline Conference foes.

The North Branford High School girls’ track team traveled to Haddam to compete in a tri-meet against Shoreline Conference teams from Haddam-Killingworth and Lyme-Old Lyme. The T-Birds lost to Haddam Killingworth 105-35 and beat Lyme Old Lyme 65-53.   Several athletes notched first-place finishes against both teams. Jessica Wharton was tops in the shot put with a throw of 28-2 ½ and the javelin at 70-1. Co-Captain Jordan Miket not only won the high jump, but was also a member of the victorious 4x100 relay team with Natalie Baughan,  Leah Martino and Katelyn Pantera, which ran a time of 54.2 “Natalie Baughan had an exceptional meet,” said Coach Floyd Parness as, in addition to being a member of the first-place 4x100 team, she also placed …

Briana Bogue Named to Dean's List at Villanova University

A Northford resident earns Dean's List.

Briana Bogue, from Northford, was named to the Dean's List at Villanova University for the fall 2011 semester. Bogue is enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Villanova University Dean's List recipients are honored by their college's respective dean. To qualify, one must be a matriculated full-time student and earn a semester grade point average of at least 3.5. Since 1842, Villanova University's Augustinian Catholic intellectual tradition has been the cornerstone of an academic community in which students learn to think critically, act compassionately and succeed while serving others. UConn's CLAS Graduation Marks End of a Journey for 2,700

Commencement for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the largest college at UConn, was divided into two ceremonies Sunday at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.

Thousands of family and friends watched on Sunday afternoon as nearly 2,700 students from the University of Connecticut’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) became UConn graduates during commencement ceremonies at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs. Representing 55 different majors from 23 departments, students received their diplomas in dual ceremonies Sunday in disciplines ranging from journalism, psychology and political science to communications, human development and family studies. Students were addressed by Cindy Luo, a graduating senior from Madison, a dual-degree student with majors in linguistics and philosophy, classics and ancient Mediterranean studies and English.
