Celebrating One Year of North Branford Patch!

North Branford Patch launched one year ago today–we wouldn't be where we are now without you, the readers, so thank you!!

One year ago, I didn’t know what Patch was or that North Branford Patch was launching on Nov. 30, changing the way the people of North Branford and Northford not only get their news, but share what is going on in their lives and connect with each other. Last year on Nov. 30, I was three days away from having my third baby and working as the sports editor for Shore Publishing Newspapers, a job that I enjoyed where I worked with wonderful people. After I had Silas, I enjoyed my time “off” (anyone who has had a baby knows it’s no vacation!). Along the way, I heard about a position as editor of North Branford Patch, covering the town I grew up in. What’s the Patch? And what’s it all about? I checked out the site, finding stories about town …

Chocolate Devastation It Is!!

On Nov. 30, North Branford Patch turns one and we're going to celebrate with free cake and coffee at Pastry Fusions.

Updated Nov. 29 The polls have closed and the results are in! North Branford Patch readers were asked to choose what kind of birthday cake we'd celebrate with on Wednesday, Nov. 30 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Pastry Fusions. And the winner is......chocolate devastation with 55 percent of the votes! Pastry Fusions' website descibes the cake as its signature cake. It's a "Chocolate cake filled with alternating layers of chocolate ganache and chocolate mousse, then frosted with a chocolate whipped cream." I don't know about you, but it sounds pretty delicious to me! I hope you'll all be able to come join me for a slice of this decadent treat and a cup of coffee tomorrow!  Updated Nov. 27 With North Branford Patch's birthday just days away, we are in …

Businesses in Our Backyard

Meet Frank Apuzzo: Owner of Pastry Fusions

Frank Apuzzo introduces himself and his family business in North Branford to Patch.

If you've ever visited Pastry Fusions, you know that just walking through the door is an experience in and of itself. The scent of hundreds of cakes, cookies, pastries, handmade donuts, truffles and stuffed breads is strong enough to knock you off your feet. I would imgaine this is what Santa Claus' work shop smells like. Owner Frank Apuzzo is discussing cakes with two patrons as I peruse the cookies and big donuts that put Dunkin' very much to shame. Apuzzo wraps up his meeting with the ladies and takes a moment to introduce himself to North Branford Patch.  North Branford Patch: What do you enjoy most doing business in North Branford? Frank Apuzzo: I live in town and wanted to keep the business in town; there were not bakeries in North …

A Day in the Life

A Day in the Life: Frank Apuzzo, Baker

For seven years, Frank Apuzzo has owned and operated Pastry Fusions, located at 999 Foxon Road in North Branford.

North Branford Patch: How did you first become interested in baking? Frank Apuzzo: One day when I was 13 or 14 years old, I was sitting on the couch watching a show called Great Chefs and there was this guy on who was making cakes and frosting them with butter cream. I used to watch Great Chefs, Frugal Gourmet, Cookin’ Cajun and Yan Can Cook. I was always interested in cooking. I cooked with my mother and my grandmother. I just always had a knack for it. My first aspiration was to be more of a chef than a baker. North Branford Patch: What was your first job in the food industry? Apuzzo: I worked at an Italian restaurant called Ristorante Faustini in East Haven. I got a job washing dishes when I was 15 years old. I quickly showed an …
