An old pump and corroded pipes caused minor disruption, but all issues should be taken care of by the end of the day.
Corroded pipes and an old pump have caused some minor water issues at Jerome Harrison Elementary School over the past few weeks. According to Superintendent Scott Schoonmaker, the pump broke three weeks ago. "The original pump was 15 years old and had reached the end of its life," said Schoonmaker. He reported that after the original pump broke, a licensed plumber on staff was able to patch the part with an alternate pump while they waited for the new pump and parts. In the meantime in order to prepare to install the new pump, some of the pipes had to be replaced. "Some of the pipes had fully disintegrated," said Schoonmaker. Totoket Valley Elementary School was the Connecticut recipient of an award from the Environmental Protection Agency.
Representatives from the Environmental Protection Agency will be visiting Totoket Valley Elementary School today to film a video with art teacher Elyse Mortensen, Principal Kris Lindsay and a student representative from each of the 4th-grade classes. The group is being honored after being the Connecticut winner of the EPA’s Paul G. Earth Artist Program Award. In the past, the contest was based on poems, essays and posters and Mortenson was thrilled that this year’s contested was broadened to include art and sculpture. “This was the perfect opportunity to get the kids involved so the 4th-grade classes and I brainstormed ideas for a community project,” said Mortensen. “It was important that it was something we could as a large group and a …
The North Branford girls’ track team competes against Shoreline Conference foes.
The North Branford High School girls’ track team traveled to Haddam to compete in a tri-meet against Shoreline Conference teams from Haddam-Killingworth and Lyme-Old Lyme. The T-Birds lost to Haddam Killingworth 105-35 and beat Lyme Old Lyme 65-53. Several athletes notched first-place finishes against both teams. Jessica Wharton was tops in the shot put with a throw of 28-2 ½ and the javelin at 70-1. Commencement for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the largest college at UConn, was divided into two ceremonies Sunday at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion.
Thousands of family and friends watched on Sunday afternoon as nearly 2,700 students from the University of Connecticut’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) became UConn graduates during commencement ceremonies at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs. Representing 55 different majors from 23 departments, students received their diplomas in dual ceremonies Sunday in disciplines ranging from journalism, psychology and political science to communications, human development and family studies. Students were addressed by Cindy Luo, a graduating senior from Madison, a dual-degree student with majors in linguistics and philosophy, classics and ancient Mediterranean studies and English. Jerome Harrison is holding Screen-Free Week through April 28.
Students at Jerome Harrison have been encouraged to go ‘Screen-Free’ from April 22 to 28. The PTO is hosting Screen-Free Week (formerly TV-Turnoff), which “is an annual celebration where children, families, schools, and communities turn off screens and turn on life. Instead of relying on screens for entertainment, participants read, daydream, explore, enjoy nature, and enjoy spending time with family and friends,” according to Commercial-Free Childhood.
