History of the Hot Dog

According to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, butchers of several nationalities introduced the hot dog to America. Sausages, then hot dogs were served at baseball games as early as 1893. It is estimated that Major League Baseball ballparks throughout the country will serve 22,435,400 hot dogs this season. That is five percent more than last year! How Many Hot Dogs Do Americans Eat?

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, also known as “Hot Dog Season,” Americans eat seven billion hot dogs! Some of the tastiest ones you can find are Hummel Hot Dogs made nearby in New Haven by the Hummel Brothers Meat Products Company.

Hot Dog Etiquette

Yes, believe it or not, there is a list of dos and don’ts about hot dogs. Here are a few: always “dress the dog,” not the bun; don’t leave bits of your bun on your plate – eat it all; and, don’t use ketchup on your hot dog when you are over the age of 18.
