My Love/Hate Relationship

Are cell phones causing the demise of manners and social skills? Every day I see more and more people engrossed in their phones and not interacting with people around them.

I have come to the conclusion I have a love/hate relationship with cell phones. Right now it’s more hate. In my opinion cell phones are turning people into anti-social, bad mannered, self-centered fools.

How did we manage when we were growing up? We went out to play all day and our parents had no way of reaching us? If I got sick at school, the nurse called my mom at home and if she couldn’t be reached, I had to suck it up till it was time to go home. When I wanted to talk to my friends, I walked over to their house and knocked on the door, or picked up the house phone and called.

I have seen my kids have entire conversations through text message, when I know that if they had called them it would have taken half the time. If my oldest is not texting then she is on Facebook or tweeting.

As for manners, they seem to be on a decline. I have had to listen to a stranger’s cell phone conversations with a doctor, while I was trying to enjoy a meal in a restaurant. Really, what makes them think I am the slightest bit interested in their medical maladies? Thankfully she was not talking to a gastroenterologist!

And what about those people that talk on their cell phones while they are having dinner with someone? What does that say to the person you are with....you are not as important to me as the person on the phone?

I went to New York to see a play in a tiny off-Broadway theater, one of the actresses was sharing a powerful moment about when her mother died and someone’s phone started ringing. Instead of rushing to silence it, she let if finish ringing. Guess she thought we were all enjoying the techno ringtone.

I have shushed people in movie theaters too. Despite the jingle in the previews asking you to silence your phone, some people think it does not apply to them. One guy had brought his son to a movie then proceeded to make phone calls–and he got angry with me when I asked him to be quiet.

I can’t be the only person that feels this way. How about we all take a stand against the obnoxious cell phone users and call them out? I can’t do this alone! If you want to join me, e-mail me your phone number and I will text you more information!
