The Matthew Picciuto Scholarship Award 2013

My initial goal regarding Matt’s scholarship was to raise enough money to award two scholarships each year until my youngest daughter Mea graduates from NBHS in 2023. Due to the success of Matt’s Mission, this year alone we are awarding eight scholarships to North Branford Students and one to a student from each town living in Guilford, Branford and East Haven. Since 2009 we have awarded 29 students Matt’s Scholarship totaling $29,000. Although helping those in need is good, Matt’s Mission Fund’s main focus is to raise awareness to the consequences of destructive driving decisions. I do not want anyone to forget Matt or how and why he died. Therefore in the future North Branford students will be required to write an essay regarding “The Consequences of Destructive Driving Decisions” should they choose to apply for Matt’s Scholarship. Although I want all students to work hard and do well, one’s GPA will not be considered and furthering ones education and the essay will be the only requirement necessary when applying for our award. Four years ago Matthew made a terrible mistake but I love him anyway. That mistake does not define who he was to me nor should it define who he was to anyone else. I am his mom and no one knew him more. To this day I am proud of my son just as I am proud of those receiving his scholarship tonight. To the students who are receiving Matt’s Scholarship, I have only one request… Take a piece of Matt with you tonight and go on to do great things! It is my honor to present The Matthew Picciuto Scholarships to: Megan Marcucci, Savannah Calamita, Dylan Podbielski, Nik Castaldi, Meghan Kehlenbach, Jake Megill, Ashley Arre, Gary Falanga
