FLASHPOLL: Romney Trumps Obama in Debate, CT Political Insiders Agree

Mitt Romney and Barack Obama traded verbal jousts in the first presidential debate of the 2012 campaign, and the consensus was that Romney came out the victor.

In the immediate aftermath of the first presidential debate, held at the University of Denver Wednesday night and moderated by PBS’ Jim Lehrer, it seems that influential Connecticut Republicans and Democrats agree on one thing: Mitt Romney won the night.

In Patch Red Nutmeg and Blue Nutmeg FlashPolls of political influencers from both sides of the aisle taken just after the debate ended, all but one of the respondents said they thought Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, had won the debate.

In fact, 12 of 15 Republicans who answered the late-night survey thought Romney had won by “a large margin,” while two of the three Democrats who answered the question thought Romney had won by a slim margin. A lone Democratic respondent thought Obama won by a wide margin.

“Mitt Romney appeared confident and presidential,” one Republican surveyed said. “Obama appeared frazzled because it's been years since his prepared statements have been challenged.”

In response to the question, “Who will be the consensus winner as declared by the national media,” though, the results were mixed. Most still thought Romney would be declared the winner, but two Republicans were “neutral” on the question, and one thought Obama would be tabbed the winner by a slim margin. All three Democrats thought Romney would be declared the winner.

There was disagreement among the Republicans on the question of what would resonate the most among Connecticut conservatives. Some thought Romney’s articulation of his tax plan and how it would help grow the economy and help middle-class families would energize the state’s Republicans, while others pointed to his argument for putting health care back in the hands of the states and his branding of Obama’s “trickle-down government philosophy.”

All the Republican respondents thought that Romney’s debate performance either strongly or somewhat improved his chances of winning the presidency in November.

Among Republican respondents, the excitement over Romney’s performance was evident.

“Governor Romney inspired excitement and enthusiasm in his base and the independent voters that cannot be duplicated by the Democratic base that is simply crossing its fingers and hoping for the best,” one GOP respondent said. “Bravo to our next President Mitt Romney.”

“Mitt was brilliant and the president missed his teleprompter,” another said.

One Republican respondent was more muted in his outlook.

“Romney still has ground to make up, but his performance tonight should move some undecided voters his way,” he said.

One Democratic respondent to the FlashPoll thought Obama drew a clear line between his economic strategy and Romney’s, but another was disappointed that “Obama did not challenge Romney on the ‘47%’ comment” and thought the Republican candidate “made a fairly good case for his jobs plan.”

None of the Democrats exuded much confidence that Obama made a great case for re-election; two of them were “neutral” on the question of whether the president’s performance made it more likely that he would earn another term in office and one “somewhat disagreed.”

“I’m very disappointed in President Obama’s energy levels tonight,” one Democrat said.

Patch’s surveys are not a scientific random sample of any larger population but rather an effort to listen to a swath of influential local Republican and Democratic activists, party leaders and elected officials in Connecticut. All of these individuals have agreed to participate in the surveys, although not all responded to Wednesday night's questions. Surveys were conducted between 10:30 and midnight on Oct. 3.

Patch will be conducting Red Nutmeg and Blue Nutmeg surveys throughout 2012 in hopes of determining the true sentiment of conservatives and liberals on the ground in Connecticut. If you are an activist, party leader or elected official and would like to take part in weekly surveys that lasts just a few minutes, please email Regional Editor Corey Fyke at corey@patch.com.

Washington had live video feed of the attack within the first 2 hours of initial contact, they knew almost immediately that this was a concerted professional attack and that there were no "protesters" in evidence at the scene. This is a fact irrefutable. Why the need to cover it up for almost 2 weeks?
Maria Giannuzzi October 26, 2012 at 12:27 pm
My words were "the President has no direct responsibility to oversee our diplomatic missions." The President has responsibility for all executive branch agencies, but as you well know, Bob, he does not oversee the daily activities of those agencies. That is why there are agency heads, like the Secretary of State, who are responsible for the day-to-day running of their departments, including security. The direct responsibility for running the State Department belongs to the the Secretary of State.
Your are hurting your credibility when you fail to acknowledge the full context of another's comments. But if your failure is one of understanding the meaning of the words, then I am sorry you don't understand.
Maria Giannuzzi October 26, 2012 at 12:32 pm
Quite true, but why did it change? What happened along the way? I think it was the emergence of the corporate state--that unholy alliance between corporations and politics.
Maria Giannuzzi October 26, 2012 at 12:35 pm
As a creative type, I'm quite used to job instability. I have hired myself and others might have to do the same. One doesn't have to "retire." Whether your work or interests generate cash or not, they do provide meaning and purpose.
DON886 October 26, 2012 at 12:36 pm
I really don't blame the president so much for the lack of security, but I do believe he must have agreed to the lie that the anti-Muslim movie was the cause. This seemed to give the terrorists something to use to motivate more attacks.
Obama does not seem to want to admit there are terrorist attacks on US interests during his admin since he believe that hurts him politically.
janet October 26, 2012 at 12:50 pm
Yes Maria, terrorist always wait for the invitation in the mail. Lybia is Obama's war, he orchestrated it and he can't blame Bush for this one. Would we have had such low security in Iraq after we took Sadam out?
R Eleveld October 26, 2012 at 12:56 pm
Maria, The President is responsible. You remember the old adage the buck stops here. If I remember correctly at some point in the past when the Chase ~$2B loss occurred you quickly blamed Jamie Dimon of Chase for an employee not even directly reporting to him. So then others can blame PBO.
Sorry forgot, in your mind hierarchy is different if its someone you like vs someone you do not like. Its the "friends" issue and your blatant double standard. Life is so easier if we treat everyone the same.
R Eleveld October 26, 2012 at 01:00 pm
If government controls major parts of the economy it can then be EXPECTED, that parties would have an interest in the outcome if it can benefit them. A logical presumption, unless you are illogical. So the "unholy" alliance as some put it is quite understandable and EXPECTED. To think otherwise is foolish.
Also to more accurately express this alliance you forgot to put into the mix unions which are big contributors and just as guilty and Georgie Soros, as well, but then again double standard time.
Maria Giannuzzi October 26, 2012 at 01:02 pm
After Iraq fell there was very little security in the country. People were looting hospitals and museums. There was chaos for months and terrible violence that continues to this day. It took many months or even years before the fortified American embassy was constructed and our diplomats were placed there permanently. And that is with 100,000 or more American troops in Iraq. Your facts are wrong, Janet, but I do agree President Bush and Vice President Cheney and their neo-con friends can be blamed for the abysmal failure in Iraq.
Maria Giannuzzi October 26, 2012 at 01:07 pm
But why was the ambassador and his staff person not with the other diplomatic personnel in the safe house? Why were they even in the embassy?
A grainy video is one thing. Indisputable proof is something quite different. Intelligence on the ground from a number of individuals is more decisive in my opinion than a video that may or may not truly disclose what is going on at the time.
Maria Giannuzzi October 26, 2012 at 01:14 pm
It is indisputable that that stupid and reprehensible film did lead to demonstrations and violence in various places around the globe. And I need to remind you that the President used the words "act of terror" when he was commenting about the Libyan attack the day after the incident. He use of those words was intentional.
I am interested in the results of the State Department's investigation. Frankly, I think we have failed to understand and acknowledge what has been really going on in the Middle East and North Africa for several decades and now are paying the price for our arrogance and ignorance.
Maria Giannuzzi October 26, 2012 at 01:19 pm
Foreign embassies in Washington, D.C. have small security staffs, but security overall is provided by Washington, D.C. police and federal police. These highly-trained police are out in force when necessary and there are other measures to protect embassies like barriers.
If the Libyan government was unable or unwilling to provide security to our embassy then the State Department should have closed the Benghazi mission.

I am SURE that Maria will find solace in this "class act" of a President. I look forward to all comments on my posting this.
THIS is what our 'current' hero, the 'president', thinks is a "really cool" ad ... Offensive beyond belief. A new low in our United States of America. Brought to you by a desperate Barack Obama and his 'team'. Video is 1 minute. Buttttt take a few moments to see the notes below the YouTube video ... http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=o6G3nwhPuR4#! If this ignorant, offensive ad doesn't bring any undecided women to the Romney/Ryan vote it would be sad ... even sad to think that ANY Obama supporter wouldn't see how desperate our president is ... Just my opinion, of course. Please VOTE ... your choice ...

Nordstrom said that requests in November and March to extend the temporary deployment of a unit of 15 "security professionals", in addition to the standing force of 24, were agreed by the state department. But appeals for more agents were turned down.At the congressional hearings, Eric Nordstrom, who was responsible for protecting US diplomats in Libya until July, said that state department officials in Washington were repeatedly warned about a perpetual and deepening concern over security.

Could businesses be thinking of waiting until the election to see who is going to be running this country over the next four years? There is a clear distinction between these two gentlemen on how they are going to treat businesses. I think if Romney wins, you will see much of this money flood back into the economy. With Obama, more of the same hunkering down. Your first two sentences of your last paragraph above said it all. You are looking to private wealth to pay off public debt.
Mike Wright October 27, 2012 at 01:24 pm
Maria, I know the saintly, caring, intellectual elite such as yourself on the left must get tired of trying to educate those of us mouth-breathing knuckle-dragging, flat-earth neanderthals on the right. Because if you are not for this president, then you are not for going Forward, not for progress. Is that right?
Mike Wright October 27, 2012 at 01:29 pm
So if he knew it was a terror attack, (and admonished Romney for saying the same thing days later as being political), why over the next sixteen days does his employees in the State Dept. run around talking about a video as being responsible and putting together a counter-video saying we are sorry even though it's not our fault and not talking about terror during the same period before acknowleging finally, again, that it was a terror attack?
Mike Wright October 27, 2012 at 01:49 pm
As for the film being "stupid and reprehensible", have you seen it? Do you know what's in it? I haven't seen it but perhaps it takes issue with fundamentalists in a religion that answer a cartoon with murder.
Mike Wright October 27, 2012 at 01:53 pm
Maria, did you ever consider that Obama is promising an expansion of the welfare state to the lower middle class in order to buy votes from the self-interested recipients?
Mike Wright October 27, 2012 at 02:00 pm
As for Connecticut, an easy "dodge" for the wealthiest (and most mobile) to avoid state taxes is to declare residency in Florida where there is no income tax The only penalty is....you have to spend more of your time in Florida, a really tough call during a long and cold winter up here.
Keep treating these folks as the states piggy bank, and they'll soon be gone, out of reach.
Mike Wright October 27, 2012 at 02:02 pm
Except rich people - they are evil and uncaring. And Republicans - they are just tools of the uncaring, right, Maria?
Mike Wright October 27, 2012 at 02:12 pm
So, lemme get this straight, Maria. One side attacks an embassy (sovereign territory), trashes and burns it down and kills four citizens of our country and you think the problem is that our ambassador wasn't in a safe house????
How do you explain that this administration is more concerned with the reputation of the Attorney General than the life of Brian Terry??? Why do people die because of the mismanagement of this administration and no one cares????
Bill October 27, 2012 at 02:35 pm
To reuse and paraphrase a leftist chant, Obama lied about why people died. If he had just fessed up from the beginning, this would probably have all gone away. So it begs the question, why did the administration lie for so long, what were they afraid of? When even CNN (that bastion of leftist propaganda) says this was a coverup, they're just unsure what was being covered up, it's got to make you wonder.
Mike Wright October 27, 2012 at 03:49 pm
Bill, you are absolutely right. We actually like when politicians admit that they are human and make mistakes, but when we know they are guilty and they refuse to take responsibility, that's when the public takes its revenge. Nixon stupidly tried to cover up the idiotic burglary of the DNC even though he didn't know about it in advance...and paid the price by resigning. Clinton claimed he didn't have sex with that woman...and paid the price by being impeached. We'll see if Obama will pay the price soon.
R Eleveld October 27, 2012 at 04:29 pm
The timing of the incidents in the Middle East are clearly an organized attempt to strike on an infamous date in US history. To think otherwise is simply stupid. That is the only word to be used.
The video is a political smokescreen that was used to provide political cover and nothing else. It was I believe "released" in June and dubbed into Arabic in July yet the attack occurred in September. Also consider that there have been reports that unrest ion that date was anticipated. Why did they not have bullets to protect themselves? I have a gun with no bullets, then all I have is a paper weight that can be used in the same manners as any other paperweight.

Businesses sit on cash when they have
1.) No place to invest the funds. What I mean is they can’t expand the business, buy other companies, repurchase their own stock at a perceived discounted value, or use capital to develop products; 2.) They believe the uncertainties in the economy make holding the cash a wiser investment than investing the cash; 3.) Distributing the cash to say shareholders is not a reasonable alternative, 4.) Some external effect may make use of the cash inappropriate based upon the information available. This is not an exhaustive list. Apple is sitting on $80MM in long term investments as of 03/2012 and arguably almost $30B in cash or cash equivalents. These are funds far in excess of what the Company needs for operations. Overseas profits are held overseas until they can be repatriated at a preferential tax rate. Just like you would look for a preferential tax rate if you had something that might benefit from such a rate. No one WANTS to pay taxes, with a few exceptions, and businesses are no different.

Call Channel 8. That's what a mom had to do here in Guilford last spring to get action after herRead More kindergartener was dropped off alone at the entrance to their condo complex. She walked over 1/2 mile along side a lake and woods to her condo. As a school bus driver and a mother I am shocked that these instances have not been dealt with swiftly! Never, ever on my watch would this happen!
Jay R Greene June 7, 2013 at 03:14 pm
Update- I get a call the other day from the school that my son was pushed while waiting for the busRead More and fell. I was told the teacher watching was a substitute and put him on the bus. When asked if he was okay I basically was told that they had no idea! (That is another story) Bottom line is I had a nice call with the principal and feel that she has done all she could. Based on her advice I contacted the Superintendent to see if I could schedule a call with him. Tuesday at 10:00 AM Obviously I see were this situation ranks!
Dawn Porter June 8, 2013 at 11:27 am
I had problems last year with out driver taking off before my son sat down. I reported this to theRead More school principal as well as DATCO. Datco could careless what the drivers do. The principal called them as well and it stopped. I now watch every day from a different window. The driver knows I will report him again if he does this again. We have had a few sub drivers do the same. Datco doesnt care what the drivers do no use in having them investigate anything. They wont listen. The thing is it has to be documented if i see anything on any bus around town you have to call it in especially when you see children not in seats jumping around ect. They really need to put cameras on the buses some kids dont listen to the drivers either its a 2 way street but the actions of dropping a kid off when its not their stop is ridicules!
