Will You Go to Prom with Me?

North Branford High School students got creative when they asked their dates to prom.

It’s that time of the year again, where high school upperclassmen feel just a little bit more tension in the atmosphere. The many questions of prom start up around February, and as soon as one person says “prom,” everyone begins to worry: Who will I bring? Will it be a good time? Will my date get along with my friends? There’s also, perhaps, the hardest question of prom: Who will I ask as my date?

Creatively popping the prom question has been the norm for seniors this year. Some have been extremely inventive, using technology to assist them in their quest for the perfect prom date.

used his TV position to his advantage when it came time to pop the question. The Friday News came on and Mr. Finkle gave his weather report for the next week. Next thing you know, he wrapped up his report by saying, “And June 1 will be looking pretty good if Ashley Distatio will go to prom with me. So Ashley, will you go to prom with me?” The answer, by the way, was yes.

Senior Daniel Landino snuck a fish tank into the locker of junior Maria Carangelo’s locker to ask her to senior prom.

"I have a fish tank, and I knew it would be something representative of me, and something easily accomplished," Landino said.

Attached to the fish tank was a note, asking her to be his date to the senior prom. She agreed.

Senior Tommy Steinke asked by inserting the big prom question into his date's, Danielle Hottin’s, prompt for the morning announcements. She agreed as well.

Not only has creativity ruled how the seniors are asking their dates to prom, but the big, brave, bold moves have also played a huge part. Senior Damoy Hunter got up in front of everyone who attended the  and asked his date right then and there. Senior Michael Forgione snuck into his date’s house to put rose petals and candles on her bed, spelling out "Prom."

“I wanted this to be something really special," he said. "It took some effort to get done and a lot of planning, but it was all worth it in the end.”

Senior Cory Onofrio had sophomore Gianna Mez roll a lacrosse ball out to senior lacrosse player Emilee Maher during her afternoon practice. The ball said “Prom?” on it.

“I knew she wouldn’t expect it and it definitely brought a smile to her face. I got what I wanted to accomplish done,” Onofrio said.

Senior Michael Matthews decided to ask his date, senior Alecia Canfield, when they were out for sushi.

"I put it in a fortune cookie," he said. "It wasn't exactly an easy process…but I got the job done. I knew my efforts would be appreciated and it was really cute."

Senior Ed Fee nailed the head onto "cute." He and his date both really enjoy nature so he headed up to a trail in Northford and carved "Prom" into a tree.  Later he took her on a sunset walk…past the tree.

Even if it isn’t sneaking into someone’s house or asking in front of a large group of people, it doesn’t mean the question isn’t special. And sometimes, simple is better.

“I didn’t really know how to ask my date," said senior Brett Hanson. "She always doodles a turkey when I sit next to her in human anatomy, so this particular class I asked her to draw a speech bubble and I put "Prom" inside of it. She was confused but once she figured it out, it was an ear-to-ear grin.  She said yes…obviously.”

NBHS' Senior Prom is Friday, June 1, oceanside this year, at Amarante's in New Haven.
