Did You Feel the Earthquake in North Branford or Northford?

Tremors from the geological event reportedly traveled as far north as Boston.

Tremors from a 5.9-magnitude earthquake are shaking things up in Connecticut. From 1668 to 2007, there are 137 earthquakes on record in Connecticut.

The United States Geological Survey reports that the quake struck at 1:51 p.m. about 34 miles north of Richmond, Va., and was felt as far north as Boston.

The quake is also causing quite a stir on social media networks. Both Facebook and Twitter are abuzz with quake-related chatter. A sampling:

  • Fox CT’s Twitter account reported that the New Haven Open tennis tournament was evacuated.
  • The New Haven Register staff felt it at their office.
  • It was felt at the learning center of Masjid al Islam on Gilbert Avenue in New Haven.
  • The Connecticut Post staff in Bridgeport felt it.
  • Officials are checking the structural integrity of a building in Shelton, CT Post reports.

In response to the earthquake, Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said, “The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection staff is at the Emergency Operations Center as a precaution, but at this point, there have been no reports of injury or damage."
