NBPD Police Dog Meets North Branford Town Council

Sergeant Mario Bernardo and Hanz, the NBPD's new canine puppy, met with the North Branford Town Council to answer questions about the canine program.

Members of the North Branford Town Council and those attending the March 5 meeting were treated to a special guest – North Branford Police Department's new German shepherd puppy Hanz and his handler, Sergeant Mario Bernardo.

Bernardo gave an overview of the NBPD's canine program with a Powerpoint presentation, explaining Hanz's bloodline and goals for the program. The pair will attend training through the Connecticut State Police in the fall.

"We're excited to kick off the program again and give it a fresh start," said Bernardo. "We've started some basic training already and I'm looking to start a website."

One component of the website will be a donation page as the program has been funded "primarily through donations so I'd like to thank the town and everyone who has donated," said Bernardo.

Bernardo said that Dr. Osario in North Branford has donated his veterinary services and also carries an insurance policy for Hanz. As far as food, Hanz is sponsored by "two of the best dog food companies," according to Bernardo. One of the dog food companies has also expressed interest in sponsoring Hanz's bullet-proof vest.

"I've gotten a lot of support from residents who are happy to have the dog back," said Bernardo. "We've also been approached by businesses who want to sponsor future events."

Bernardo and Hanz have been busy with events, having visited the Women's Club, the Smith Library during February vacation week, Read Across America Day at Jerome Harrison Elementary School and an elementary school in East Haven.

Bernardo plans to continue using events and demonstrations to help socialize Hanz with more school visits and the North Branford Potato and Corn Festival as possibilities.
