At the April 12 North Branford , senior Tyler Roberts was honored for a recent award. Roberts was recognized by the National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts in the area of dance. He was one of only 597 who received the award out of more than 5,000 applicants.
“It’s an honor to have one our best and brightest here,” said Superintendent Scott Schoonmaker. “This is a very prestigious award and we’re so proud of his accomplishment.”
Roberts takes part in North Branford’s Educational Center for the Arts (ECA) program, taking classes at North Branford High School in the morning before taking a bus to New Haven for a dance program.
“We’re so fortunate to have students like Tyler participate in this program, which has helped him reach another level and give him opportunities he wouldn’t have here,” said Schoonmaker.
During public comments, members of the board went on to compliment both Roberts for his accomplishments and the success of the ECA program.
"When the the national touring companies come to our auditorium, Tyler takes first every year," said Joe Tenczar, a video production teacher for NBHS, who also videotapes the BOE meetings. "There are so many students at all grade levels that go underneath the radar and it’s wonderful when the board does recognize them. By 19, you’ll see Tyler on Broadway–just watch his name, you will see it in bright lights."
